Sauder Village welcomed families and fishing fans for a day of outdoor fun with its first annual Fishing Derby, held at the Sauder Village Campground.
With nearly 110 participants between pre-registered and walk-up entries, the event brought together community members of all ages for a friendly competition and a chance to enjoy the scenic campground.
The derby served a dual purpose, offering a fun activity while also helping raise funds to restock the pond with fish.
Campground staff are looking to expand family-focused offerings on site, making the derby a step toward future improvements.
Fish species in the pond included crappie, bass, rock bass, perch, and catfish, and more, giving anglers plenty of opportunity to reel in something exciting.
Youth fishing kicked off the day, followed by open class fishing later in the afternoon. Trophies were awarded for first, second, and third place finishes in each category, along with recognition for the largest fish caught overall.
Throughout the day, visitors also enjoyed a wildlife presentation from Nature’s Nursery, who brought along rehabilitated animals for an educational experience.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources sponsored an inflatable archery range, adding another layer of outdoor fun.
Volunteers from the Archbold and Pettisville FFA chapters helped make the event run smoothly, and a trolley was used to shuttle guests around the campground.
Guests were also treated to food from the Outlaw BBQ food truck, which served from late morning through early afternoon.
As the day wound down, campers gathered around a group fire to relax and roast s’mores, adding a warm and memorable close to a successful first-year event.
With positive feedback and strong turnout, organizers are hopeful the Fishing Derby will become an annual tradition at Sauder Village.
