Schwebel Baking Co., a longtime Ohio bakery company with 120 years in business, is reportedly preparing to wind down operations and pursue liquidation.
The company, known for producing bread, buns, rolls and other bakery products, has served retail, grocery, food service and institutional customers across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
Reports indicate the wind-down will include the company’s bakeries in Youngstown and Hebron, along with retail stores and distribution centers across the tri-state area. Operations are expected to continue through the Fourth of July weekend before being phased out through the summer.
The reported closure comes after years of financial and operational challenges for the company, including aging facilities and equipment, labor costs, pension obligations and changing consumer demand for traditional bakery products.
Schwebel’s reportedly explored options to continue operating, including a possible sale of the business or securing additional investment, but was unable to find a sustainable path forward.
Locally, Schwebel’s products have been sold in stores across Ohio, including northwest Ohio. While an exact final date for local availability has not been confirmed, the company’s reported wind-down is expected to affect product availability as operations are phased out this summer.
