“Of the 37 calls made from the fairgrounds in the last 5 years, 32 of them were related to non-emergency situations,” Sheriff Kochert shared, detailing the vandalism recently highlighted by the Williams County Agricultural Society’s visit to the Williams County Commissioners to see about limiting access to the back half of the grounds with the closure of a public road.

In the last year, there have been a couple of incidents that occurred due to a homeless individual taking up residence under the grandstand at the fairgrounds, and the sheriff shared that they believe him to be responsible for a broken window and door.

The other two calls were the result of two separate individuals taking their trucks to the parking lots, with one being caught.

These two incidents caused damage to the grounds by way of tire marks, which make it hard for those that maintain the grounds.

The sheriff shared that not only are regular rounds made through the area, but there is also a satellite station for that side of the county at the grounds, which is often manned.

“There’s nothing going on there. Nothing. It’s status quo,” shared the sheriff. “If there is anything going on to the degree to which the road must be closed, it isn’t getting reported.”

“We encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity at the fairgrounds to call the non-emergency line and leave a complaint so that such instances can be documented.”

The non-emergency line for the Williams County Sheriff’s Office is (419) 636-3151.
