Spring Sports Roundup For March 30th

VARSITY BASEBALL

Montpelier 10 Stryker 0 (5 inn.)

Montpelier pitcher Blake Altaffer fired a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 11 batters to lead Montpelier past Stryker in their BBC opener. Altaffer also helped himself at the plate by going 1-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tylor Yahraus was a perfect 3-3 for the Locos as he had a triple and three RBIs.

Hilltop 14 Edon 4 (5 inn.)

A seven-run first inning set the tone as Hilltop rolled to a 14-4 win over Edon in the BBC opener for both clubs. Evan Schoonover had two hits, three RBIs for the Cadets while Ian Hoffman, who was the winning pitcher for Hilltop, had a pair of doubles and Ethan Varney went 2-4 and drove in two runs. Edon was led at the plate by Cole Vasquez and Garrett Skiles with two hits each and Caden Nester tallied two RBIs.

Pettisville 17 North Central 11

Nate Kiem smacked a triple and had two RBIs with Gideon Myers going 4-6 with four RBIs on the night as Pettisville grabbed a 17-11 win over North Central. The Blackbirds led 12-11 going to the seventh inning where they posted five runs to pull away. Quin Burt registered two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles while Colton Hicks had two singles and three RBIs.

Swanton 8 Cardinal Stritch 5 (8 inn.)

Trailing 5-0 after three innings, the Bulldogs rallied to tie the game and force extra inning where they scored three in the eight to get an 8-5 win. Blake Szalapski paced Swanton offensively by going 2-4 with three RBIs and Devon Crouse went six innings on the mound to get the win.

Napoleon 17 Bryan 9

Leading 4-2 heading to the fourth, the Wildcats exploded for nine runs in the inning and went on to a 17-9 win over the Golden Bears. Bryan was able to close the deficit with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning but were unable to get any closer. Clayton Rupp tallied a single, double, two RBIs and Taysen Deckrosh had a double, two RBIs for Bryan.

Evergreen 11 Delta 5

Brock Hudik went 5-5 and scored five runs to lead Evergreen to a 1-5 non-league win over Delta.

Edgerton 15 Liberty Center 3 (5 inn.)

Edgerton (1-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one inning and rolled to their first win of the season. Eight different Bulldogs drove in runs led by Gannon Ripke with three while Kale Merillat, Noah Landel, Creed Muehlfeld, and Jordan Warner had two apiece.

Toledo Central Catholic 14 Wauseon 4 (6 inn.)

The Indians fell behind early 10-1 and were unable to rally as they fell to 0-2 on the season after a 14-4 loss at Central Catholic. Maddux Chamberlin went 2-3 with two singles and threw 2 2/3 innings on the hill with three strikeouts and two walks for Wauseon.

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Stryker 16 Montpelier 10

Stryker scored four runs in the third and fourth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit and go on to a 16-10 BBC win. Sage Woolace reached base six times for Stryker by going 4-4 (two doubles, two singles) and walked twice. Ashley Caudill, Alyssa Custer, and Amy Prekop each had three hits for Montpelier with Custer also having three RBIs.

Pettisville 8 North Central 2

The Lady Blackbirds used a five-run fifth inning followed by two more runs in the sixth to pull away for an 8-2 win over North Central. Alli King spearheaded the Pettisville offense by going 2-3 with three RBIs while the Eagles were paced by two hits and two RBIs from Kendall Sutton.

Archbold 10 Maumee 7

Archbold responded after Maumee took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second with seven runs in their half of the inning as they improved to 2-0 on the season. Addi Ziegler and Kylie Sauder each had doubles for Archbold who took advantage of six fielding errors in the game by Maumee.

Bryan 7 Paulding 5

Bre Long had a single, double, and knocked in two runs to help Bryan move their record to 3-0 with a 7-5 win over Paulding. Alex Vreeland was also 2-3 with two RBIs for Bryan and Addie Arnold pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Otsego 6 Evergreen 4

Evergreen battled back from a 5-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh but came up short in their season opener at Otsego. Freshman Macy Chamberlin led the Evergreen attack by going 2-3 with a triple, double, and a run batted in.

Wauseon 9 Edgerton 1

Wauseon did their damage in two innings with four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth as they began the season 3-0 after a win over Edgerton. Payton Albright went 3-3 at the plate, including hitting her fourth homer of the season, and had three RBIs on the night.

Freshman Bri Hays was 1-4 with a double and two RBIs while Jettie Burget went 3-4 in the game. Grace Schroeder provided the Edgerton offense with two double and drove in their lone run.
