Stryker Dean of Students, Beth Morr, informed Stryker School Board at the November 21, 2022 board meeting, that a group of around fifty educators from surrounding school districts will be joining Stryker teachers on December 12-16 for Orton Gillingham Dyslexia and Curriculum Training.

She explained that as the state is now requiring intervention teachers, title teachers, and grades K-3 teachers to have eighteen hours of this training, which will be a week long.

Superintendent Nate Johnson interjected that since they had to have the training, it seemed sensible to host it and offer it to other schools, which brought down the cost (coming from title money), as well as making it easily accessible for Stryker staff.

Large groups from Pettisville and Hilltop, plus teachers from a number of other area schools will be in attendance and all “will get everything that they need at this training,” Morr said.

As the teachers will be in this training from 8-3:30 for the whole week, the school has hired subs to cover all of their classes (M-Th as Friday is off for students) and as it will be held in the auditorium, physical education will be moved to the high school gym for the week.

Also in her report, Morr shared November 21-23 Parent Teacher Conferences; November 30 Karuna House for 1st and 2nd grades; December 5 PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention) awards at Girls Varsity Basketball game; December 5-9 Therapy Dog Training for Jet’s handlers – Mrs. Morr, Mr. Schultz, Mrs. Fritz and Mrs. Sonnenberg; and December 9 Pre-K-3rd Grade Christmas Program at 6 p.m.

Principal Dave Schultz was not present so Mr. Johnson shared his report: September Student of the Month was Emmelyn Westrick for Responsibility and October Student of the Month was Jeffrie Pace for Honesty; November 11 Congrats to Stryker team for being Williams County Runner up at Varsity Quiz Bowl at the ESC; Parent/Teacher Conferences Nov. 21 3:30-6:30, Nov. 22 3:30-6:30 and Nov. 23 8:30-3:30 as no students that day; Nov. 24-28 Fall Break; Nov. 30 Karuna House visit; Christmas for Kids raised $4,100.36, all in coins, at the Crazy Coin Day, and all the money will be spent on Stryker students this year.

Board member Emily Clemens commented that the band concert was great, and Mr. Maroon did a good job.

In other business, the board approved Treasurer Jill Peters’ reports and recommendations which included:

  • financial report for October 2022 – general fund cash balance of $9,264,491.87, total revenue of $548,033.93, and total expenses of $521,236
  • donations: $100 each from Subway and Drop Zone Pizza for flag football shirts/into football fund; $1,278.50 from Steve and Joan Batterson for Stryker FFA; anonymous gift of $200 for boys basketball fund; $203 from Stryker Athletic Boosters 50/50 drawing at fall fest for boys basketball fund; $111 from Stryker Class of 1966 for Panther Tech supplies; and $300 from Stryker Rotary for Panther Tech supplies
  • amended certificate of estimated resources and amendment to appropriations due to changes in grant money
  • audit is going well

The board also approved minutes of October meeting, agenda for present meeting and superintendent’s personnel recommendation for supplemental contract with Austin Nickells to be varsity baseball coach, as he played in college.

Mr. Johnson also reported to the board that Tech Club now has over eighty students (K-12) and is going great.

The board then agreed to adjust the time for the next board meeting, due to an away basketball game in Hicksville that night, so the next meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on December 12, 2022 (instead of 5:30).

With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:45.
