oldfashioned_games WEBArchbold, OH – Families from throughout the region will be gathering at Sauder Village on Saturday, July 9 to experience life on an Ohio farm more than 100 years ago. With festive fiddle music and great hands-on activities like old-fashioned games, making homemade ice cream, bee keeping and more – Summer on the Farm/Fiddle Contest continues to be a favorite summer event at Sauder Village!

“Summer on the Farm is a perfect day for families to create special memories together,” shared Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations specialist. “As guests get involved with traditional summer activities on the farm they will gain a better understanding of how our ancestors lived while having a lot of fun at the same time!”

Throughout the day, a number of unique activities will be offered to allow guests to experience life in the past. Children can help hand-crank ice cream, grind sorghum, wash clothes on a scrub board and roll out a pie crust. There will be cow milking demonstrations, chicken butchering, cream separating and a meet the farm animals program. Throughout the day guests can stop by the Garden Shed to visit with a local beekeeper and young guests will enjoy a bee-themed storytime and craft activity at Little Pioneers Homestead.

In honor of the 2016 Olympics, there will be old-fashioned games and competitions for guests to participate in. Guests of all ages will enjoy participating in sack races, egg & spoon races, hoop rolling, croquet and marble games. At Natives & Newcomers guests can play traditional Native American games.

Another highlight of this fun-filled day is the annual Fiddle Contest. The Fiddle Contest will begin at 1:00 with fiddlers from throughout the region gathering to compete in one of three categories – student, open and senior. Each contestant will have five minutes to perform a hoedown and a waltz using old time style and techniques. Fiddlers will also perform on the Village Green from 10:00 – 11:30 and again after the Fiddle Contest. The Bridge County Bluegrass Band will also be sharing their talents during the afternoon. Collectively, this group of talented Ohio musicans brings over a half century of music experience to the stage. Their performance is sure to be toe-tapping with the driving beat of traditional bluegrass, mournful songs and unforgettable instrumentals.

Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and each Sunday afternoon from noon-4:00 p.m. The Historic Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. Admission is $16.00 for adults and $10.00 for students ages 6-16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and Sauder Village members receive free admission to the Historic Village for an entire year. Senior, Military and AAA discounts are also available. Again this year, children 16 and under are free every Sunday this season!
