The Wauseon City Council held their regular meeting on Monday, June 16th. The meeting began at 5:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. Council first moved to approve the minutes from the previous meeting before hearing committee reports.
The Personnel Committee discussed updated job descriptions during their recent meeting. Most of the positions received a recommendation for approval with the exception of the utility clerk, which was sent back for revision.
The committee worked with an outside HR consultant, and updated descriptions will be brought to council for consideration at an upcoming meeting.
Council then welcomed Jerry Smith of the Lions Club, who presented a special recognition to Director of Public Service Keith Torbet.
Smith had originally advocated for a traffic signal at the crossing on Shoop Avenue by Don’s Automotive and returned to present Torbet with a Presidential Certificate from the Lions Club.
The certificate was awarded in honor of the installation of a hybrid pedestrian beacon and is one of the top honors given by the club.
Department head reports were then heard by council. Public Service Director Keith Torbet provided an update on improvements being made to the city’s parks and bike trail.
A concrete pad is being installed along Fulton Street for a new drinking fountain, and another fountain at South Park is being upgraded to a more durable and winter-friendly model. The city is also considering the addition of more fountains in other parks.
In addition, Torbet stated that he had met with representatives from Trio Tech to review options for security cameras at public restrooms used during Homecoming Park and at Reighard Park.
Council was also informed that some more signage reminding residents to clean up after their pets will be added near pet waste stations, and a new station may be placed along the trail near Ottokee Street.
These signs will state out some of the important reasons people are asked to pick up pet waste, including transmissible diseases.
Council member Shane Chamberlin expressed his hope that residents would help keep the dog-friendly parks clean, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership.
It was also mentioned that this year’s homecoming will not include a ride vendor. However, other family activities are being planned for the event.
Council member Sarah Heising then noted that the Wauseon Chamber of Commerce is currently in the process of hiring for the director position and expressed her support for the progress being made.
Following these reports, council voted to approve the payment of the bills before moving to adjourn at 5:15 p.m.
