WAUSEON – Lady Indians’ golfer Ruth Shelt recently committed to continue her education and golf career at Cleary University (NAIA) in Howell, Michigan.
“I chose Cleary because it’s a small school and it’s a business only which means I will spend less because I will have to take less general education classes,” said Shelt, who will be studying Sports Management and Promotion.
Having a sibling who went through the college recruiting process helped Shelt navigate the process.
“The recruiting process wasn’t too hard. My sister played a sport in college, so I was able to ask her for help on my emails,” Shelt explained.
“I also used an app/website called fieldlevel, which is a collegiate sports recruiting app and I got quite a few coaches to contact me from that.
“After I sent the emails I had the Cleary coach, Christian Mercure, answer and he wanted to call and talk about the school and the program. When I visited I got to meet some of the players, the coach, and admissions.”
Shelt enjoyed an accomplished high school career as she was a member of two straight state qualifying teams, placed third at districts her senior year, recorded a hole-in-one as a junior, helped the Indians qualify for districts all four years, currently holds several girls’ golf school records, and shot even par three times during her senior season.
“I am looking forward to playing for the golf team and getting to meet new people,” added Shelt.
