INTERACTING WITH THE KIDS … New SRO Michael Oehlers takes a photo with some of the Wauseon students.

Officer Michael Oehlers was recently named the new School Resource Officer for Wauseon Schools. He has been with Wauseon PD since 2013, begining as an Auxiliary Officer before moving to full-time in 2020.

“Previous SRO John Borcherdt, showed me around with SRO stuff for awhile and I took an interest in it”, said Oehlers when commenting how he became interested in the position.

Oehlers, who has a seven-year old and nine year-old child, said he wants to save school, see everyone get together and see if he can help disperse the groups and labels in school. “Take it one step at a time. Work on what’s heavy and what’s light.”

A normal day consists of patrolling the schools, bouncing back and forth between the buildings, and if there is an issue, just head to the building to take care of it.

Oehlers also goes into classrooms to meet and greet the kids. “I’m excited to hang out with the kids, it’s always interesting to see what they say and what is on their minds”, added Oehlers.

“I want to give them support and guide them while they are at school. My favorite quote is, chance favors the prepared mind, so I think being at the school supports that and builds it up.”
