The Wauseon Walmart Supercenter marked the completion of its extensive remodel with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community celebration Friday morning.

While the store remained open throughout the renovation process, the event formally recognized the store’s grand reopening and showcased the many upgrades made to enhance both in-store and online customer experiences.

Located at 485 Airport Highway, the Wauseon location has served the community for more than 30 years. Over time, the store has seen smaller updates, but the latest project was a comprehensive, top-to-bottom transformation.

From refinished floors and modernized ceilings to a redesigned layout and upgraded departments, the renovation aimed to create a space that feels open, modern, and more user-friendly.

Among the most noticeable improvements are wider aisles, improved lighting, refreshed signage, and updated Vision and Pharmacy departments.

A new store layout provides more room for shoppers and makes it easier to navigate the variety of products and services now available.

Digital upgrades were also a key part of the remodel. Throughout the store, new QR codes and interactive touchpoints help connect customers with Walmart’s online inventory, supporting the company’s growing digital business.

Customers can now more easily access online pickup, express delivery, and mobile payment options, offering added flexibility and convenience.

At the front of the store, checkout areas received a functional makeover. While the self-checkout lanes remain in place, Walmart added three additional staffed lanes to reduce wait times during peak shopping hours.

Store leaders said the shift reflects an ongoing effort to provide more personal service while maintaining speed and efficiency.

Walmart associates, joined by Wauseon Mayor Kathy Huner and representatives from several local groups, celebrated the reopening with a presentation of $6,000 in community grants.

Local recipients included Christmas Cheer of Fulton County and Diabetes Youth Services, each receiving $2,500, along with Operation Clean Duds, which received $1,500.

The ceremony also featured the unveiling of a large community mural installed near the grocery entrance. The artwork highlights iconic features of Wauseon and Fulton County, including the Michigan Southern Air Railway, the Fulton County Museum, the fairgrounds, surrounding farmland, and a hot air balloon bearing the name of the city.

The mural was created as part of Walmart’s nationwide Community Mural Program, which commissions original public art installations that reflect the local culture of each store’s surrounding area.

Store manager Josue Gomez, who joined the Wauseon Walmart team during the COVID-19 era, shared that he initially expected to be in the role for just a year.

Instead, he has remained for four years, citing his deep connection to the community and his pride in leading a team of dedicated associates.

The remodel not only reinforces Walmart’s commitment to its customers in Wauseon and beyond but also highlights the company’s broader mission to strengthen communities through both service and support.
