EDON – The Bombers 2023 season ended with another playoff appearance as they would go 7-5, including an upset of third-seeded Waynesfield Goshen (34-27) in the first round before falling to McComb (57-0) in the Division VII quarterfinals.
“From the beginning of the season to the end, we showed many signs of improvement”, said head coach Bob Olwin, who enter his fifth season at Edon.
“We were able to beat an undefeated team in the first round of the playoffs and we should be able to use the things we learned from that experience going into the 2024 season.
Nineteen letterwinners are back for Edon featuring quarterback Kyler Sapp (2nd team All-Northwest District 7), running back Cohen Hulbert, and receivers Christian Owens, Kendol Brigle, Briggs Gallehue, Max Radabaugh (2nd team All-Northwest District 7), and Colton Willis.
Edon will have two holes to fill on the offensive line with starting center Peyton Trausch and offensive guard Kole Olds graduating.
The Bombers will look to improve the running game out of their spread offense as Hulbert along with Gauge Nester, Carter Steinke, and Trent Buck will be called upon to give Edon a more balanced attack.
Olwin added that they need to run better pass routes, catch the ball more consistently, improve screen game, complete a high percentage of passes, and block the perimeter more consistently as other keys to be successful offensively.
On defense, Edon will need to replace their second leading tackler in Olds at middle linebacker and must fill the void left at defensive end with the graduation of Trausch.
“We need to keep improving fundamentally and transfer what is taught in practice to the field”, said Olwin when talking about his defense. “We have to tackle better and get to the ball faster.”
PROMISING NEWCOMERS: Sophomores – Gunner Aldrich, Lane Brandt, Jackson Clinger, Logan Reitzel, Peyton Robinett, Aricin Rodriguez, Cale Sheline.
STRENGTHS: Nine starters return on offense and defense.
WEAKNESSES: Replacing Peyton Trausch and Kole Olds.
