MAUMEE- The first four innings of Monday night’s district semifinal was a pitcher’s duel between Evergreen’s Breanna Huffman and Otsego ace Lexi North.
That was until the fifth inning when Otsego used small ball to get their first hits of the night to setup North who hit a bomb to left to put Otsego on top as they went on to a 4-0 win at Rolf Park.
The Vikings first time at the plate resulted in their best scoring threat of night as Macy Chamberlin drew a walk and Huffman singled to left with one out. North would buckle down though to strikeout the next two Evergreen hitters to escape the inning unscathed.
Huffman’s single would be the only hit of the game until the bottom of the fifth when the first two Otsego batters reached base via a bunt.
Huffman responded for Evergreen to get a strikeout and then retired Summer Berry to keep runners at first and second with two outs.
That set the stage for North to help herself with her bat as knocked a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to put the Knights in front 3-0.
Evergreen had one more scoring threat in the sixth when Chamberlin tripled to right with two outs before North struck out Huffman swinging to end the inning.
Otsego added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff solo home run by Evelyn Rider.
Both pitchers ended the night in double digits for strikeouts with Huffman totaling 10 and North tallied 14 to go along with allowing just two hits.
Evergreen finishes the season with a record of 15-9.
