It’s Retro Year at the Stryker Public Library. That means that once a month, on the second Saturday of the month, this Williams County Library will celebrate a “Blast from the Past.”

January’s Retro Event, which took place on January 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., celebrated Elvis Presley’s birthday, which actually occurred on January 8.

To celebrate Elvis’s birthday, participants made tie-dye t-shirts, ate Elvis’s favorite sandwich, grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches, ate one of his favorite desserts, cupcakes and also competed in trivia contests. The winners received an Elvis keepsake photo.

The signature event was the making of tie-dye t-shirts. Here, participants brought in white t-shirts that they rolled up into a small ball. These “balls” were then wrapped tighter (the tighter the rubber band, the better).

The participants then placed their ball into a bowl and grabbed one or many colors, that they then showered the ball with.

Participants could then take their t-shirt ball home. They were then instructed to wait 12 hours and then rinse all the dye out, wash the t-shirt, dry it and then it would be ready to wear.

If wanted, the participants could then bring their t-shirt back to the library and have an Elvis silhouette put on their tie-dye t-shirt..

Next month’s Retro event will be Vintage Valentine’s Day cards. To find out what Retro events will take place, check the Williams County website, or check What’s Happening in Stryker on the Facebook Page.
