Column: IS IT REALLY SO?: A Visit From 60 Minutes

By: Dr. Jerry Bergman
Montpelier, Ohio

As an author, I often have contacts with the mass media. One summer, a producer for “60 Minutes” called me about a story they were doing.

After a long conversation, the producer and his assistant decided to fly from New York to Toledo, then rent a car to my home in Montpelier, Ohio, for an in-depth interview.

We had a long conversation and, in the end, I am confident that I learned more from them than they learned from me.

They, at least a decade ago, checked and rechecked the facts related to the story. I not only conveyed to them what I knew about the case, but supplied them with several names to support my claims.

I found out later that they carefully checked my information with those persons that I helped them to locate.

They also, from the names I gave them, obtained other sources to confirm the information given them. They called several times later to ensure the information they had was correct.

I was very impressed with their care in making sure that a fair and balanced story would result, which aired later that month.

Unfortunately, it appears that this care is not always followed today, especially when it comes to politics.

Modern mainstream media has lost a great deal of credibility due to their goal to make the news instead of just objectively reporting the news.

And, due to their decided left slant and their goal to be politically correct in harmony with the woke-agenda popular today, many journalists are not always fully honest or they leave out important balancing information (i.e., the whole truth).
