Swanton Local School District held their Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, July 12th. The meeting began around 6:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and approval of the agenda as well as the minutes from the previous meeting.

The board then went on to approve financial reports, acceptance of donations, transfer or returns of advances, and the then and now certifications.

It was then stated that North Star made a donation through the service, and the board is going to use this to wipe out any negative balances and get accounts paid up to date.

There was one transfer of funds from the general fund to the debt service fund for the certificate of participation that was completed for building renovations done in 2017.

The loan for the renovations is set to be paid off in 2025. April and May invoices for ABI were paid but the board needed to approve the amount for the invoice as the amount was greater than the purchase order amount.

Next, former Middle School Principal Matt Smith, who recently resigned to become principal at Fallen Timbers Middle School in Whitehouse, spoke about state testing scores and that the school scored well this past year.

Swanton was in the top three schools in the area to score the highest for their state tests. They even went through half the year with a substitute to prepare them for testing time.

The board then gave a NEOLA update as well as personnel updates. These included language changes in the policies to wash the pronouns she/he and change them to they/them.

This was done in order to reflect the latest legislation. The board had two resignations given and one moving from assist principal to head principal at the middle school.

The board then stated that there were no building reports but that construction on the main road replacement from Main Street back to the first three way stop at the high school is set to begin on Monday, July 17th.

Joyce Kinsman then addressed the board to thank them for having her for the past 11 ½ years.

With no other items to address the board moved to adjourn at 6:49 p.m. The next meeting will be held on August 9th, 2023, at 6:30 p.m.
