STORIES OF THE FBI … Williams County Sheriff Tom Kochert was the guest speaker at the January 17, 2024 meeting of the Bryan Kiwanis Club. He told the story of the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover supplying municipalities in NW Ohio, Indiana and Michigan with Thompson Sub Machine Guns, model M1921A, to help defend themselves from bank robbers in the 1930s or as Hoover described them, “scofflaws and miscreants”. Robbers such as Al Capone, John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, and Baby Face Nelson were the scourge of law enforcement and significantly out-gunned local police at the time. The Williams County Sheriff’s Office still possesses the gun sent to them and the sheriff brought the gun with him to the meeting.
