METAMORA (May 2, 2024) – Most in attendance were there to see whether Macy Chamberlin could get one step closer to the OHSAA all-time girls’ softball home run mark.
But it was Edgerton hurler Corinne Cape who stole the show, tossing a four-hitter as the Bulldogs took a 4-1 win over the Vikings.
Cape had a hand in the Bulldogs two-run first which gave her all the runs she needed when she singled with two down off Viking starter Evy Shrader.
Third baseman Olivia Wallace followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall for a quick Bulldog lead. On the mound, Cape allowed just a walk in the first three innings, striking out three Vikings.
Cape hit a bump in the road in the fourth when Chamberlin’s leadoff single and a walk put two Vikings on base with no one out.
However, a baserunning blunder on Kira Keller’s pop up turned into a double play, and after a walk and hit batter, Cape got a force play bounce out to end the threat.
Edgerton added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, again after two were out. Kennedy Stuut pulled the fake bunt and slap for a single and Lola Giesige followed with another.
Casey Everetts’ ringing triple chased both runners home to double the Edgerton lead at 4-0.
Evergreen scored an unearned run in the sixth when Chamberlin walked, Keller singled and a pair of Bulldogs errors marked the only Viking run of the day.
Cape allowed four hits, walked four and struck out six in going the distance for the victory.
Shrader took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, five hits, walking one and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings. Keller finished up, only giving up a walk while whiffing four Bulldogs in 2 1/3.
Chamberlin went 1-3 with a walk on the day as the Penn St. signee remained at 57 career home runs in the chase to the record of 60 in the state of Ohio.
