Archbold, OH — The Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center (NwOESC) board recently convened to discuss preparations for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Superintendent Kerri Weir provided a comprehensive update on various initiatives and events planned for the new academic year.

Key Events and Training Sessions

The NwOESC 2024 Administrators’ Conference is scheduled for Friday, August 2, with Jonathan Alsheimer set to deliver the keynote address. Additionally, bus and school vehicle driver training will be held on Monday, August 5, at Archbold High School. Chad Rex is spearheading this training program, which has been meticulously crafted to ensure excellence. The fall staff meeting for all NwOESC personnel is slated for Wednesday, August 7. Dr. Katie Peters will be the keynote speaker at this event.

Wellness Initiatives

A wellness grant has been submitted for the 2024-25 school year. The wellness committee, comprising representatives from each NwOESC department, plans to use the grant funds to promote health and wellness among staff.

This includes incentives for annual health screenings, setting and tracking personal health goals, participating in fitness events, and other wellness activities. Staff appreciation incentives are also part of the initiative.

Expansion of CORAS Efforts

Superintendent Weir reported that the Coalition of Ohio Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS) is working to broaden its reach across the state.

Several area ESCs recognize the value of joining CORAS and believe it could significantly advance rural school and ESC efforts statewide.

Administrative Updates

Weir provided updates on recent administrative searches, including the appointment of a new superintendent for Ayersville Local Schools and a treasurer for Pike-Delta-York Local Schools. The Pike-Delta-York Board of Education has approved the hiring of Leland Hays as treasurer, effective August 1, replacing Matt Feasel. The Ayersville Board of Education has appointed Brian Becher as superintendent, also effective August 1.

Legislative Liaison Report

Brian Baker, serving as the Ohio School Boards Association legislative liaison, reported on the final week of legislative sessions before the summer break.

He highlighted the expected passage of the capital budget and discussed House Bill 629, which aims to provide flexibility with licensure and address various educational regulations.

The bill also sets a $600 million budget for new school buildings and capital projects.Baker noted ongoing discussions around College Credit Plus and student records and data privacy, emphasizing the importance of monitoring these bills as they progress.

Financial and Insurance Matters

CFO/Treasurer Abby Lorenzen presented two insurance coverage options for board approval: one from Ohio School Plan covering property, liability, and fleet policies, and another from CFC focusing on cyber insurance.

The CFC policy was highlighted for its lower deductible of $10,000 compared to $25,000 and no aggregate limit for all members, ensuring full access to the $1 million aggregate limit regardless of claims by other members.

Lorenzen also updated the board on the fiscal year 2025 initial appropriations, modifications to the fiscal year 2024 appropriations, and the annual building maintenance fund transfer. Final program cost packets were distributed to district superintendents and treasurers via email, streamlining end-of-year processes.

The NwOESC board continues to make strides in preparing for the upcoming school year, ensuring that staff and students are well-supported and equipped for success.
