Williams County Commissioner, Lou Hilkert spoke to the Stryker Rotary Club at their regular meeting. Lou told the club he is one of three elected officials in the position, and the other two commissioners are Brian Davis and Al Word. He also provided some rules concerning decision making. Resolutions must be passed by a majority vote and if a commissioner is missing from a meeting and the remaining two are not in agreement the vote must delayed for the third vote to be cast.
One commissioner is unable to conduct business alone but the county coroner is able to sit in for the second commissioner if neither of the remaining commissioners is available. They work with a budget of just over twelve million dollars but have oversight on other budgets totaling forty-five million dollars. Lou also told the Rotarians that the commissioners hold deed to all county property and title to all county vehicles. They approve ballot language on levies before they are sent on to the Election Board for final approval. Lou felt some of the most controversial decisions have been over ditches and drainage issues. Lou also told the club that an upcoming renovation to the attic and structural part of the courthouse roof must be completed soon, and the project has been estimated at 1.6 million dollars.
Lou also informed the club that Kati Zartman has been appointed as a full time Prosecuting Attorney. She will be setting up the office on the fourth floor of the courthouse and the commissioners will be moving their office to the Annex building.
