The Joyce Markey Party Room at the YMCA was the location of the Taine Club October meeting. Hostesses Alice Miller and Jodi LaMantia welcomed members and shared treats to go with the theme of the day.

President Jackie Boyd led a short business meeting. The program was presented by Miller who reviewed the book, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.

Published in 2022, the novel is an exploration of friendship and hope, tracing a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. Tova Sullivan cleans during the night shift at an aquarium and forms a friendship with Marcellus, an octopus.

Tova has never gotten over the disappearance of her eighteen-year-old son 30 years ago. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened and musters up the energy to unearth the truth for Tova before it’s too late.

The story is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

The next Taine Club meeting will be at the home of Helene Moog. Jodi LaMantia will lead the discussion on the book, Black Out Book Clubby Amy Green. Pictured are hostess Jodi LaMantia and speaker Alice Miller.
