DELTA – Delta senior Josilyn Welch recently signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her running career as a member of the cross country and track teams at the University of Findlay.

Welch, who will be a Nursing major, quickly knew Findlay was for her. “I had a few other schools in mind; but once I visited Findlay, my mind was made up”, said Welch.

“The campus felt very welcoming and everyone I met was incredibly kind. During lunch with several of the cross country runners, it was evident that they respect and support each other, and have established a great team chemistry”, she continued.

“The girls on the team have all been so sweet and I really like the coaching staff. I was also very impressed with Findlay’s nursing program.”

Welch’s running career began in the 8th grade after posting the fastest mile run in her Physical Education class.

“After running the fastest mile in my PE class, I decided to join the track team. My times in the 1600m were pretty good, so several kids who ran cross country encouraged me to give it a try.”

“I liked chasing the boys and trying to keep up with their pace, so I joined the cross country team my freshman year. I never dreamed that I would qualify for the state meet my first year.”

“I was a dual-sport athlete my freshman and sophomore years, playing soccer and running cross country. After my sophomore year, I decided to focus solely on running so that I might be able to run at the collegiate level.”

Welch’s high school career has included plenty of accolades beginning with cross country where she is the Delta High School girls cross country (5K) record holder; four-time cross country state qualifier; three-time cross country All-Ohio; three-time cross country Academic All-Ohio; 2023 NWOAL Cross Country Female Runner of the Year; 2024 NWOAL Cross Country Female Runner-Up; four-time NWOAL Cross Country First Team All-League; 2021 and 2024 Cross Country District Champion.

On the track she is the Delta High School girls 3200m record holder; track state qualifier (3200m); Track Academic All-Ohio; 2024 3200m NWOAL Runner-Up.

Academically she has been on the First Honor Roll every quarter (requires a 3.5 minimum GPA), is a member of the National Honor Society, a Sources of Strength peer leader, and yearbook editor.

“I would like to thank my parents for always supporting me in every way possible. They have cheered me on and provided post-race hugs at every race over the past four years”, said Welch when talking about the people who’ve helped her in her career. “Their love and encouragement motivate me to continue to make them proud.”

“I also have incredible grandparents and other family members who have always believed in me, and willingly spend their Saturday mornings attending my cross country and track invitationals.”

“I’d also like to thank my brother, my friends, my teachers, my church family, the Delta community, and all of my amazing teammates.”

“Last, but certainly not least, thank you to my coaches for everything you’ve done for me. You are wonderful role models, and your training has allowed me to exceed my goals”, added Welch.
