This year’s theme, “Local Legends” was the perfect tribute to the Edon American Legion Post 662, as they were the grand marshals Saturday in the annual parade which was part of the Edon Days celebration.

Since its chartering in 1946, the Edon American Legion Post 662 with an average of 40 members on the charter, continue to serve the Edon and surrounding communities.

They are dedicated to service through military rites at veteran funerals, flag etiquette, patriotic instruction, education through the schools and the Buckeye Boys and Girls State Programs.

In addition, they also sponsored and continue to carry out the veteran banner project for the town. Dr. Michael Miller, owner of Wellness Huddle in Edon, gave the prayer and also sung the National Anthem prior to the start of the parade.

The parade was highlighted by 55 units and the entries ranging from high school marching bands (Edon and Edgerton), local fire departments, local queens, and local businesses to 4-H Clubs.

A number of prizes were awarded in various categories of the parade. Reflections Salon & Tanning of Edon was chosen as the Best of Show, for their “Army Strong” float.

Taking first place honors in the non-commercial division was the Williams County Republican Party. Second place honors in the non-commercial division went to the Swanton Fire Department for their 1939 Ford Fire Truck. It’s owned by Lee Lawrence and Tim and Kim Hickman.

In the commercial division, Thiel Construction Company of Blakeslee took first place honors. The company has been in business since 1961. Thiel Supply Center of Blakeslee was awarded second place in the commercial division.

Organizing this year’s parade is Theta Kappa which was founded in 1972 and has served the Edon community for the past 53 years.

Not only do they provide hundreds of hours of service in a variety of ways every year in the community, but they also sponsor various projects such as the Easter Egg Hunt along with Art, Literature/Literacy, Music, Speech and Hearing projects.

The financial support received from these projects goes towards college scholarships to local students.

This year’s parade chairperson was Marcia Mohre. Sandie Carlson, Pat Brigle and Jen Stantz served as parade judges while Randy Edwards, formerly of WBNO Radio, Bryan was the emcee.

The Edon Days got underway on Friday morning with a customer appreciation meal served by State Bank, an Edon Days Ice Cream Train and music entertainment by the Hubie Ashcraft Band.

On Saturday, a fishing derby was held at Walz Park, Church of Christ ‘Day in the Park’ event, a mattress sale, a co-ed softball tournament, a firemen’s breakfast at the Edon Fire Hall, a petting zoo at Baker Park, a waterball tournament and a Cruise In Car Show at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church parking lot.

This year’s Edon Days concluded on Sunday with a co-ed volleyball tournament and a community church service at Walz Park Pavilion.
