WAUSEON (December 11, 2025) – The Delta Panthers held off the tenacious Wauseon Indians 37-31 after taking an early lead and holding it for the duration of the game Thursday evening.
Play was subdued during the first period, with each team’s defense controlling play. Delta quickly struck, scoring during their first and second possessions of the game with a three-pointer each from junior Anabell Gillen and sophomore Anna Lohman.
The next points wouldn’t come until there were about two minutes left in the quarter, when Delta senior Keagyn Gillen fouled Wauseon junior Ella Tule, who made one of her two free throws to bring the score to 6-1.
At the very end of the period, Wauseon senior Sophia Rupp was fouled by senior Abbey Todd and hit both of her free throws, but Lohman immediately threw up a long-distance buzzer beater from just past mid-court to put the Panthers up 9-3.
The Panthers struck first again in the second period, again on their first two possessions, this time with a basket each from Keagyn Gillen and sophomore Olivia Mohring. The Indians followed up the second Delta basket with one of their own from Tule.
Tule went on to put up two free throws between a pair of Delta treys, both courtesy of Lohman.
Another basket from Keagyn Gillen wrapped up Panther scoring for the half, with the Indians ending the quarter with a Rupp basket and a pair of free throws each from Rupp and Tule to trim Delta’s lead to 21-13.
The pace of play slowed again in the third quarter, with each team’s defenses finding success in suffocating the offensive attempts of the other while catching the occasional foul.
Wauseon junior Mia Barajas sank the first basket of the second half, followed quickly by one from Anabell Gillen. Another lengthy back-and-forth led to another basket from Tule.
The Indians failed to capitalize on a breakaway shortly before Lohman stole the ball and broke away for a successful Panther basket as she flew out of bounds.
Two more Indian baskets by Tule and junior Laynee Sanford wrapped up the quarter to put Wauseon in striking distance at 25-21.
Lohman kept her momentum going with a picture-perfect three, later joined by a trey from senior Ellie Martinez.
Wauseon fought back with a pair of baskets courtesy of Tule and senior Marin Leatherman shortly before Tule was fouled and put in one of two free throws to keep close to Delta at 31-26.
Lohman stepped in with another three for the Panthers while Tule put in another basket for the Indians just before they took a timeout with just over a minute remaining on the clock and the score at 34-28.
Delta turned their defense up a notch as Wauseon fought to catch up, earning three consecutive fouls, then stealing the ball to burn more time despite their failure to score.
In the end, the Indians were only able to put up three more points via a trey from Barajas, matched by three via one and two free throws from Lohman and junior Addison Wyse, respectively, to end the contest 37-31.
