Williams County Auditor Deborah S. Nester has announced that homeowners have from January 7, 2013 until June 3, 2013, to apply for Ohio’s Homestead Exemption program. Applicants can apply for the Homestead Exemption in the year they turn 65 as long as they own and occupy the house as of January 1 of the year they are filing for.

Eligible homeowners who apply during the above time period can be approved for the homestead exemption for tax year 2013 (which affects taxes paid in 2014) and future years. For homeowners who missed the 2012 deadline, they can also apply during that time for a retroactive tax reduction.

The Homestead Exemption exempts the first $25,000 of market value of a qualifying homeowner’s principle residence from property taxes. It is available to property owners who are at least 65 years old, and to those homeowners who qualify as being permanently and totally disabled.

Applications are available on the Auditor’s website at www.co.williams.oh.us/auditor; as well as in the Auditor’s office located on the second floor of the Williams County Courthouse, One Courthouse Square, Bryan, Ohio. Our office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
