Jade Scott of Montpelier was recently announced as being a finalist in the 21st annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.

11-year old Jade is a fifth grader at Montpelier Middle School. She founded her school’s chapter of Help Us Give Shoes (HUGS) in 2014, and has collected more than 3,000 pairs of shoes, and $1,240 through two drives and sponsorships. Jade, who continues to collect and donate shoes to those in need, has also begun collecting snow boots so that children can be protected during the cold and wet winters.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program, based solely on volunteer service. All public and private middle level and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and hands on network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award. These local honorees were then reviewed by an independent judging panel, which selected State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based upon criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth.

Congratulations, Jade!
