The Swanton Area Chamber of Commerce recently was awarded a Fund Every County grant from the Ohio Arts Council. In continuing our effort to bring awareness to the arts in Swanton, we will be offering FREE art classes for the young and young at heart. The Chamber will provide all materials at NO COST to the participants. All that will be necessary is an interest in exploring acrylic painting for adults and drawing for the youth. These classes will be led by award winning artist Nora Sallows.

Seating is limited to the first 20 adults and youth in each class on a first come, first serve basis. If you’d like to register, pleas call Neil at the chamber at 419-826-1941, or email swantoncc@aol.com. Deadline for registration is Monday, May 2, 2016.

For Kids in Grades 5-8
A FREE four week drawing course on Saturday mornings exploring line, perspective, and shapes, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM, May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2016, at the Swanton Library 305 Chestnut.

Many believe the arts have been neglected in public schools for the last decade, while schools have shifted their focus toward common core subjects like reading and math. Studies show that it’s important for children to have the opportunity to participate in simple, creative activities. Studying art strengthens problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The benefits carry over into other parts of life and often result in better academic performance and decision making. The act of creating instills self-esteem and encourages experimentation in both children and adults.

For the Adults
Painting for Beginners – Learn to relax and explore color with acrylic paint, Monday evenings 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM, May 9, 16, 23, and June 6, 2016, at the Swanton Library 305 Chestnut.

Painting is enjoyable and can become a wonderful hobby and great stress reliever once you learn the basics. In this class, you will follow along as an experienced instructor guides you in a step-by-step process through the creation of a painting. Learn how to mix and blend colors. The classes will focus on landscape painting, but you can use what you learn to paint any subject.

The kids class will build on each session while the adult class could be open to more people. In other words, if someone only wants to attend only one or two classes, there would be an opportunity for someone else to participate because each class uses a unique image and results in a finished piece.
