Herbert “Chuck” Leininger, Jr. 71 of Montpelier died Wednesday afternoon at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance. He was born on June 20th 1941 in Henry County, Ohio to Herbert G.J. and Mary M. (Miller) Leininger. Chuck attended Ayersville local school system and Indiana-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Chuck served his country in the Army National Guard. Chuck was a farmer in both Williams and Defiance Counties. He also worked at B.F. Goodrich in Woodburn, Indiana as a tire builder. Sophia M. Gear, 106 of Waldron, Michigan died Monday evening, September 3rd 2012 at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home in Montpelier. She was born on January 23 rd 1906 in Ransom Township, Michigan to Eddie A. and Hattie W. (Britton) Lister. Sophia married Jay C. Gear, Sr. and he preceded her in death on June 11th 1954. During Monday, September 10 meeting, Montpelier resident, Angel Fritsch asked council to consider moving Trick or Treat to Saturday, October 27. She presented a letter with signatures from numerous members of the community stating reasons for moving Trick or Treat to a Saturday. By moving Trick or Treat to a Saturday, the traditional door to door activity could be scheduled for an earlier, and possibly longer, hour. Superintendent Jamie Grime told Board members and guests “there are a lot of people in this community wanting to help do big things for our students” as he acknowledged the receipt of over $12,000 in donations during the month of August. “I just want to thank everybody involved in these organizations to provide for our kids.” Superintendent Grime noted the high school English Department had a need of 20 laptops for the students. Josh Fritsch and Bill Blakely of the Montpelier, OH Water Treatment Plant have been taking weather observations for the National Weather Service (NWS) since 2002. Precipitation (rainfall, snowfall, snow depth) along with high and low temperatures are recorded each day. They also took river readings on the St. Joseph River in town. Their observations helped to continue weather observations at Montpelier, OH for the National Weather Service since 1891. With the resignation of full-time officer Steve Towns who left his position to serve as interim Williams County Sheriff, West Unity once again had an opening to fill on the police force. Chief J.R. Jones recommended that council move part-time officer, Phil Fry, into the full-time opening. Sworn in back in April as a West Unity police officer, Fry has been a part-time member of the West Unity Police department up until now. Plans are actively underway for the West Unity Fall Fest, which will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012. The West Unity Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Relay for Life, will hold its Chili Fest on that day in the downtown area. Clarence F Montgomery, (Carnie), 97 years, of rural Montpelier, passed away Tuesday September 4, 2012, in his home with his family by his side, under the care of Hospice of Williams County. Carnie was born July 14, 1915, in Montpelier, the son of the late Arthur and Helen (Vance) Montgomery. He was a 1933 graduate of Montpelier High School. He married Violet Irene Churchman on August 17, 1940 and she survives. Virginia Mae (Hug) Kunisch, 86, passed away on August 24, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born near Edon, Ohio, on December 28, 1925, to August and Flora Hug (Ries). She married Raymond J. Kunisch of Toledo on June 11, 1949, and raised seven children.
