Celebrate Grandparents Day With The Family At Sauder Village

September 4, 2015Updated:November 30, 2016No Comments4 Mins Read

DSC_0076Archbold, OH – Remember the “good old days” when life moved at a slower pace? When daily chores involved gathering eggs, working in the garden, and cooking a meal from scratch? With a buy one get one free deal for all grandparents and free admission for kids on Sunday, September 13. Grandparents are invited to celebrate Grandparents Day by creating special memories with their grandkids at Sauder Village!

“A visit to Historic Sauder Village offers guests an opportunity to reflect on the past and experience the lives of our pioneer ancestors,” shared Kim Krieger, Media Relations. “Whether it’s a couple looking for a relaxing day away, a fun day with grandchildren or a special outing with good friends – Sauder Village is like a ‘blast from the past’ for guests of all ages. And, the buy one get one free Grandparent Day special offers grandparents an affordable way to enjoy a fun getaway!”

Recognized as Ohio’s largest living history village, the award-winning destination offers plenty for guests to see and do. In more than 40 historic homes and shops, costumed guides and working craftsmen welcome guests from around the world and help them experience the past in rural Northwest Ohio. Throughout the Historic Village, guests can explore historic homes, community shops, Native American area, Pioneer Settlement area, and gardens. Guests of all ages enjoy visiting places like the 1910 Homestead, District 16 School, Grist Mill, Herb Shop, Depot, Church and General Store. Throughout the Village guests can also marvel at craftsmen blending skill and creativity in glass, metals, fabric, wood and clay. These talented traditional and contemporary craftsmen not only demonstrate their trade but also offer hand-crafted items available for sale in places like the Spinning Shop, Pottery Shop, Glass Shop and Tiffin River Woodworks.

“A favorite stop for guests this year is the newly renovated Grime Homestead,” Krieger added. “Guests love seeing modern artifacts like a telephone, radio and player piano in the home and enjoy hearing stories and watching demonstrations to learn more about life in the 1920s in Northwest Ohio.”

Grandparents and great-grandparents often enjoy reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ while touring the Historic Village. While watching a cooking demonstration in the 1920 Homestead, sitting at a desk in the District 16 School or hearing stories in the Barbershop, guests often feel as though they’re taking a trip down memory lane. And since it’s not a guided tour, guests can take their time while experiencing life in the past at their own pace. Bringing grandkids to the Village often allows grandparents to feel like a kid again! A favorite stop for grandparents with very young grandkids is Little Pioneers Homestead. In this special area guests can really “play pioneer” as they gather eggs, milk the fiberglass cow and pretend to cook over at the fireplace in the log cabin. Little Pioneers Homestead offers hands-on fun for all ages! Grandparents will also enjoy trying hands-on activities and introducing their grandkids to the barnyard animals at Sauder Village.

A visit to Sauder Village would not be complete without a ride on the horse and buggy or the Erie Express Train. Other favorite stops include a visit to the Ice Cream Parlor and Lauber’s General Store. The Barn Restaurant offers a unique place to enjoy a home-style meal and for those guests looking to extend their stay, overnight accommodations are available at the Heritage Inn or the newly expanded Sauder Village Campground.

Other upcoming Sauder Village events in September include Homeschool Appreciation Days, Preserving Our Memories, Celebrate our Artisans and Apple Butter Making Week. New this year a Fiber Arts Fest is also planned for the last weekend in September. A complete schedule of 2015 events is available online at http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/events.asp
