On Monday, February 17th, the Village of Edgerton invited the public and stakeholders to participate in an open house public meeting to learn more about the pedestrian safety and connectivity improvements being constructed along many roadways within the village. Village Administrator Dawn Fitzcharles and Mayor Robert Day along with council members were available for questions.
The town hall council chambers were set up with information packets, maps, and photos of the potential project Improvements such as sidewalks and curb ramps, crosswalks protected crossings, and traffic calming on school grounds, also for the public to observe including Edgerton Local Schools safe routes to school travel plan.
QR codes to scan were also available that take you directly to the Village Website with additional details and a comment section.
This project was recommended as part of a safety study performed in 2022 with a focus on Safe Routes to School for students near and enroute to Edgerton Local Schools. The project’s primary goal is to improve the safety of pedestrians throughout the village.
The project will involve the construction of approximately 19,500 linear feet of sidewalk along parts of 20 roadways within the village, five pedestrian-actuated protected crossings, improved pedestrian approaches to railroad crossings, high-visibility crosswalk pavement markings, and other safety features.
Minor property impacts are expected in certain areas and the village has already begun or will soon begin notifying all property owners that may be affected. There may be minor and temporary impacts to certain utilities near the roadways.
The project is tentatively scheduled to be constructed in 2026 and is currently estimated at a cost of $2.5 million.
Funding for the project has been granted through several ODOT programs (Safe Routes to School, Highway Safety Improvement Program, and Transportation Alternatives Program), in addition to capital funds.
Additional information can be obtained by contacting Fitzcharles, DawnF@edgerton-ohio.com 419-298.2912, or through the project website: www.edgerton-ohio.com/pedestrian-safety-project/.
The village welcomes comments regarding the social, environmental, and economic impacts of this proposed project.
Additionally, they would appreciate any information on the existence of cultural resources (archaeological, historic, architectural), ecological resources (streams, wetlands, etc.), or hazardous materials (dump sites, underground and aboveground storage tanks, etc.) within the project area.
Comments can be submitted via the project website, email, phone, or mail until March 21, 2025.
