Elwood “Woody” Grunden (1936-2021)

Elwood H. “Woody” Grunden, age 85, of Butler, Indiana, passed away at 5:40 P.M. on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Laurels of DeKalb where he was a resident. He was formerly a resident of Kelly, NC; Dickinson, Texas; and Bryan, Ohio.

He was born on February 6, 1936, in Paulding, Ohio, the son of James Oliver and Anna Viola (Miller) Grunden. He married Norma (Meyer) Crowe on February 14, 1988 in Sherwood, Ohio and she preceded him in death on March 8, 2013

Woody was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving on the USS Rankin during the Suez Canal Crisis of 1956-1957. A skilled fabricator, he applied his talents to building stock cars and also fabricating equipment for heavy industry, aerospace, oil fields, and food processing.

He was an active outdoorsman, and in his free time he enjoyed competitive archery, camping, deer hunting, and fishing.

Survivors include three sons: Paul Grunden and Michael (Anne) Grunden of Columbus, Ohio, Walter (Han Li) Grunden of Bowling Green, Ohio; four grandchildren, Eric Grunden, Niels Grunden, Hannah Grunden and Lucia Grunden; two step children, Tom (Kathy) Sims and Charity Sims, both of Edgerton; seven step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sandra Hirsch.


He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Robert, James and DeWayne; and three sisters, Imogene Hirsch, Madeline Rumsey and Linda Tolentino.

In keeping with Woody’s requests there will be no visitation or services. Private interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery, Edgerton.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Krill Funeral Service, Edgerton, Ohio.
