The Fayette School District in northwest Fulton County has cancelled future volleyball games for two weeks, rescheduling matches for a later time. An email this morning to The Village Reporter has confirmed the cancellations are due to quarantine precautionary measures. The school district has indicated that no students have tested positive for COVID-19.
In an email response, Fayette Athletic Director Aaron Hylander stated, “There will be no press release (concerning the cancellations). What I can tell you is that we have no positive COVID cases among our student population, and our girls volleyball team was quarantined by the Fulton County Health Department according to their guidelines as a precautionary measure.”
Hylander went onto add, “The school is following all protocols that the Health Department has put in place. These are the facts that we are sharing with anyone who asks. We are not permitted, nor would we want to comment on any one individual in question just to address rumors.”
Fulton County Health Department Commissioner Kim Cupp stated in an early afternoon phone call that other teams from Fulton County have experienced similar quarantine precautions earlier in the season which interrupted planned practice schedules. Cupp went onto stress that the key focus is to “stop the spread which is why the quarantine is so important.”
Cupp did indicate that the precaution for Fayette was made due to the fact the team was in contact with a person that tested positive for COVID-19, not someone who simply had symptoms. Because of the small number of coaches and adults associated with the Fayette Eagle Volleyball team, neither the Health Department or the School District would comment on whether the positive COVID-19 case was a coach, which was widely rumored in the Fayette community over the past 24 hours.
