Excitement filled the air as community members, students, and school officials gathered this week to break ground on the Bluestreak Athletic Complex, named The Miller Athletic Complex, marking the beginning of a long-envisioned project that aims to reshape the future of athletics in the Archbold area. The facility was named in honor of Dean Miller and the Miller family.

After more than a year of planning, design work, and fundraising, construction is officially underway on a facility that will significantly expand opportunities for student-athletes while also serving the broader community.

The multi-phase complex is located to the rear of the high school building and is expected to provide much-needed space and flexibility for a wide range of athletic programs.

Doug Krauss, chairman of the Bluestreak Athletic Complex Committee and a longtime coach in the district, reflected on what the project means to those involved.

“It’s an exciting day for Archbold, the community, and also the schools and our athletes,” Krauss said. “It’s been over a year in the planning, and we are certainly excited about breaking ground today and also the start of the building.”

“This will be a huge source of pride for our community, for our school and our athletes. I can’t stress enough on the importance of the value of what this is going to bring to our entire community.”

The first phase of the project includes a 45,000-square-foot expansion to the district’s existing athletic facilities.

Once completed, the new complex will feature a significantly larger weight room, a new wrestling room, and a wide-open indoor turf area designed to accommodate practice and training year-round. Additional features include golf simulators and drop-down batting cages.

Archbold Superintendent Jayson Selgo explained the design and functionality of the new space. “The primary part of the phase one was a weight room, obviously much larger than one we currently have, the wrestling room, and a large open turf area, golf simulators, and there’ll be batting cages that we’re able to drop down,” Selgo said.

He added that the project will help ease scheduling challenges in the district’s current gym spaces.

“The expansion of this project will allow some additional flexibility for the gym space, which will be utilized by volleyball and some other things, but we really needed space for some of the other sports, which will then free the gyms up.”

Although the current construction focuses on core infrastructure, future phases are already being discussed. Plans for the next phase could include multiple courts for tennis, basketball, pickleball, and additional accommodations for sports like cross country and volleyball.

“We do have potential future projects in place that would include multiple courts for some of the other sports that were not directly involved such as cross country, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts and pickleball courts, with all of those being incorporated into the second part of the project when we get to that point,” Selgo said.

Funding for the $5 million project has come through a combination of district resources and strong community support.

Committee members and volunteers launched a sustained outreach campaign that brought in donations from local businesses, families, alumni, and residents.

Bill Rufenacht, a member of the Bluestreak Athletic Complex Committee, said he’s still in awe of how far the project has come. “I am very, very excited. I will be the first to say that I was not sure that, with a $5 million dollar project, how realistic it was.”

“So, yes, I am overjoyed,” Rufenacht said. He added that when students finally get to use the new facility, “there will be a lot of hooting and hollering going on.”

As construction moves forward, those involved say the Bluestreak Athletic Complex is more than just a building project, it’s a community investment in the future of Archbold students and athletics.
