Joyce Gail (nee Coleman) Harmon, age 80, passed away on Jan. 28, 2021, at the Laurels Nursing Center; she had bravely fought Alzheimer’s, metastatic cancer and COVID-19.

Often described as a “firecracker” with fierce intelligence and quick wit, Joyce was born in Wolfpit, Pike County, Kentucky, on Jan. 2, 1941.

After graduating from King’s Daughters Nursing School (Ashland, Kentucky), Joyce moved to Bryan, Ohio, with husband, Billy “Bennie” Harmon, her lifelong love. She was employed as a registered nurse at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers for 44 years.

In addition to working full-time and raising three daughters, Joyce was an avid seamstress, quilter and spent many hours each year “putting up” vegetables from the family garden.

Remaining to cherish many memories are daughters, Kimberly (Suzanne) Harmon, Kelly (Sean) Hash and Taylor (Nick) Peters; granddaughters, Autumn and Makala Hash; great-granddaughters, Ophelia Harmon and Sofia Cruz; stepgrandchildren, Neil Von Ahn, Abby Von Ahn; great-stepgrandchildren, Sarah and Katie Von Ahn and Rosie and Lily Maston.

She was preceded in death by parents, Berns and Alma Coleman; husband, Bennie; and son-in-law, Sean Hash. Joyce is also survived by siblings, Kenneth (Janet), Robert (Brenda), Brenda (George) Potter, Gary, Johnny (Pat) and Janie Damron; brother- and sister-in-law, Mac and Judy Coleman of Rockhouse, Kentucky; nieces; nephews; cousins; many friends; and special nurse and caregiver, Missi Thompson.

There will be a visitation at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, at Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville, Kentucky, followed by graveside service at Annie E. Young Cemetery, Pikeville. The family thanks Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Ohio, for their assistance in preparing and transporting Joyce home to Kentucky.

Social distancing and masks will be required.
