Mary-J.-Gillen-WEBMary J. Gillen, 80, of Montpelier, Ohio passed away suddenly January 10, 2016, in her home. She was born March 16, 1935 in Defiance County, Ohio to John and Mary (Willitzer) Wagner. Mary attended St. Michael’s Ridge School in Defiance, She married Menard J. Gillen on June 30, 1956, and shortly after they moved to the farm in Montpelier. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montpelier, and the Rosary Alter Society of the Church.

She is survived by one son, Dan (Lonnie) Gillen of Montpelier; two grandchildren, Trent of Montpelier and Nikki of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Valeria Barber, Grace Cape, Marcie (Jerry) Froelich and her twin Martha (Chuck) Konecny.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Menard on August 9, 1992, a granddaughter Kristi Jo in 1989, eight brothers, Carl, Paul, Bernard, Justin, John, Raymond, Walter and James Wagner, and three sisters, Irene Baker, Rosemary Eisel and Joann Keil.

Visitation for Mary will be on Thursday, January 14th from 3-7pm at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. There will be a 7pm Rosary Service at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be on Friday at 10:30am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montpelier with Father Fred Duschl to officiate.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Montpelier Senior Center “Meals” or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier.
