The Montpelier Board of Education held their September session on the 12th at 5:30 p.m. After a moment of silence and the pledge of allegiance, roll call was taken.
Present at this meeting were board members Mr. Clinger, Mrs. Gambler, Mr. Owen, Mrs. Rockey, and Mr. Rose. Also present were Superintendent Grime and Assistant Treasurer Mrs. Long.
Parent Tasha Thompson then addressed the board, sharing that her daughter was hit in the parking lot last May.
Although she was happy to see new stop signs and speed bumps, Ms. Thompson urged the board to consider keeping an adult in the back parking lot to supervise the teens driving, as the stop signs and speed bumps only slow them down on the way out of the parking lot, while the most risk remains in the parking lot itself.
“The phone call I got,” she said, “I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I think if it’s preventable, we should do our best to prevent it.”
After Rose promised to consider the suggestion, the school calendar proposal for 2024-2025 was then handed out, and the legislative report was given.
Elementary School Principal Lance Thorp reported that the beginning of the year is looking to be successful, sharing that kids have been taking lessons on 9/11 and Constitution Day, and will also see a “Start with Hello” spirit week that has been put together to promote belonging and acceptance among youth.

The elementary walk-a-thon will take place the morning of Oct. 5, and Sept. 6 will see the kindergarteners take a field trip to Leaders Farms.
High school Principal Su Thorp reported that the school year is starting off great, and that August 25 saw their first ever E3 event, focused on community service.
Homecoming will be Sept. 29 against Vanlue, and a new math consultant has been invited to analyze and coach math teachers in order to raise student math scores.
