On May 13, 2014 at the Williams County Veterans Service Center in Bryan they held a small ceremony to honor a Williams County Veteran. Warren G. Hulbert was presented the Bronze Star Medal on behalf of the President of the United States of America and the Williams County Veterans Service Commission by Kevin Motter (President). His wife Shelby and son Warren Hulbert II stood by his side. Corporal Hulbert served for the United States Army, Company L/ 47th Infantry Regiment/9th Division. The Bronze Star Medal was awarded for exceptional gallantry in service to the United States of America. This award was implemented and authorized to all soldiers who had received the Combat Infantryman Badge during World War II as warranted in Executive Order dated February 4, 1944 and under provision AR 600-8-22. The basis for this was that the Combat Infantry Badge was awarded only to soldiers who has borne the hardships of personal combat with the enemy which resulted in General Marshall’s support of the Bronze Star Medal. “The fact that Army ground troops, Infantry soldiers in particular, lead miserable lives of extreme discomfort”; Corporal Hulbert’s sacrifices to include being captured and held as a Prisoner of War, were in fact part of the overall victory of WWII.
Jeremy Matthews GySgt, USMC and Skyler Engel, US Army looked through over five thousand files to locate someone who would be eligible for the Bronze Star Medal. They were able to find 58 and they contact them. Mr. Warren Hulbert was the one who responded and worked with the Veterans Service Center to be able to receive this award for his service and sacrifice. The Bronze Star Medal is the fourth-highest individual military award and the ninth-highest by order of precedence in the US Military. The County Veterans Service Officer and Director were also present for this ceremony as well as Veterans Service Officer Jeremy Matthews and his family, Skyler Engel who is the Administrative Assistant at WCVSC, and Member of the WCVSC Commission Eldon Smith.
