The Ohio Redistricting Commission, a seven member commission formed every 10 years, recently saw unanimous approval of the new district maps that will be used for the next decade on Sept. 26, 2023.
These maps were drawn based on the 2020 census, which noted the state population at 11,799,448.
This resulted in a target population for each of the 33 Senate districts being computed to 119,186. These maps can be viewed at: https://www.redistricting.ohio.gov/maps/view-maps .
1st District Ohio Senator Rob McColley had a bit to say about the teamwork exemplified through this bipartisan effort, sharing that it “proved that good faith negotiations with our colleagues from both sides of the aisle guided by the process approved by the voters to draw legislative districts can work exactly the way it was intended to work, when not undermined by out-of-state special interest groups.”
With the polarization sometimes seen in the House and Senate, it is refreshing to hear a Senator share that they are “very pleased with the bipartisan effort” put into a project of such great importance.
