North Central Board Of Education Accepts Resignation Of Superintendent William Hanak

The North Central Board of Education held their meeting on Monday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call.

The board first heard comments from board members. Homer Hendricks read a thank you from Mrs. Deb Meyers thanking the Board for the retirement gift she was given. Mr. Burnett congratulated the fall coaches and athletes on a great start to the year with athletics. Mr. Martin added good luck to the Volleyball team for tomorrow night at districts.

The board then moved on to the introduction of guests. Mr. Jim Snivley, SRO, shared a painting with the board that was done for his office by Raina Cox.

She was also presented with a certificate thanking her for her wonderful artwork. The board then recognized the achievements of the following individuals.

Zachary Hayes – Golf, 1st Team BBC, BBC Player of the Year & District Qualifier, Mason Sanford -Golf, 14 Team BBC, Colin Patten – Golf, 2nd Team BBC, Ben Pettit – Golf, BBC Honorable Mention, HS Golf Team – 2021 Co-BBC Champions (13-1), Team includes: Zachary Hayes, Keegan Hickman, Colton Hicks, Landen Nickloy, Colin Patten, Ben Pettit, Mason Sanford & Coach Eric Smeltzer.

Brittney and Chuck White then read a statement that she had prepared regarding the school’s curriculum. She cited concerns in regard to instances that took place with an employee wearing a shirt that stated political stances related to gay rights, transgenders, and black lives matter.

She continued with the statement and asked why this was being allowed and what the board has done regarding the stance they had made to monitor the curriculum. She went on to ask the board for an apology due to them previously stating that they would not allow CRT in the school but, that in her view it is.

Chuck then went on to explain instances that had taken place in regard to Brittney’s statement.Videos had been sent to the board that were being shown in class. The videos are from PBS.org education and it was said that it is unacceptable that the videos are being shown in the classrooms.

The board then moved on to hear the treasurers report with the following items being approved. Minutes from the September 14th meeting and the September 22nd special meeting. Financial statements and investments from the month of September.

The 5-year forecast for October FY22 as presented followed by appropriations. It was stated that the OSBA Capital Conference and Trade Show will be taking in Columbus on November 7th through the 9th.

The Administrators Reports then followed after with the superintendent speaking first. The school currently has 596 students enrolled. An update and review for policy regarding Covid-19 was done. There may be a new position available for custodial and bus driver.

The Tri-County Conference for football has been applied for. The school will be waiting to see if they are invited into the conference.

The next regular meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 16th at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Eagle room. It was also asked if the school has recently surveyed parents on why the choose to open enroll to another district and what the school can do to get them back.

The Elementary School and High School Principal then presented reports to the board followed by a recap from the Athletic Director on what all had taken place recently in regard to Fall sports. The board then moved to hear recommendations from the superintendent with the following items being approved.

An approval for Mary Smith as a tutor for Learning Loss, Gr. 2. An approval for Michelle Oxender as a Full-Time Substitute for the reminder of the school year. An approval for the purchase of a John Deere 2038R Compact Utility Tractor at a cost of $27,667. An approval for the purchase of a John Deere 1570 Terrain Cut Front Mower with accessories at a cost of $32,492.

The board then moved to approve the following consent agenda items. Kaitlyn Creek and Tammy Swank as cafeteria substitutes. One Year supplemental contracts for Rob Taylor – JH Quiz Bowl, and Steven Williams – 7th Grade Girls Basketball Coach. The resignation of William D. Hanak from the role of Superintendent, effective July 31st, 2022, for the purpose of retirement.

Approval was then given for the NwOESC teacher and paraprofessional substitute list dated September 29th, 2021, for the current school year followed by the National FFA Convention on October 26th through the 30th in Indianapolis Indiana.

The board then entered into executive session at 8:17 p.m. Upon return at 9:25 p.m. the board voted to adjourn at 9:26 p.m.
