PETTISVILLE – Pettisville versus Stryker. When it comes to BBC girls’ hoops, this matchup has for many moons been nothing short of a high-speed pressure cooker where defense rules the roost. Such was the case in The Birdcage on January 11.
The first half was vintage, with neither team being able to crack the opposing pressure defense to establish a run that would open up some breathing room. Pettisville held a four-point lead after one period, but the Lady Panthers came back to take a 21-20 advantage at the intermission. The third period was the key though, as halftime adjustments by the Lady Blackbirds throttled the Stryker offense, allowing the hometown girls to go on an 11-3 run that made the difference in what became a 46-39 Pettisville win.
“Our girls stepped up to our challenge at halftime to raise their intensity, and they responded by holding Stryker to just three points in the third quarter,” said Pettisville Head Coach Jason Waldvogel. “Lauren Hostetler played a solid game for us on both ends of the floor. Audra Klopfenstein did a tremendous job of defending Conner Varner.”
Lauren Hostetler landed a trio of treys and 14 total points for the 8-4/4-1 Ladybirds, while Dana Fricke added 13. Audra Klopfenstein posted 8 points, Jordyn Pursel had 6 points and Mikala Avina had 5.
Connor Sullivan canned three trifectas on the way to a game-high 15 for the Lady Panthers, and Hannah Doehrmann added 7. Varner was held to just 6 points, Christie Huston had 5 points, and Maddie Uribes, Emily Rupp and Jordan Waidelich had 2 points apiece.
