In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, Pioneer Library held a Blackout Poetry Contest. To enter the contest, teens and adults were given a page cut out from a withdrawn paperback book. Then they created a poem by blacking out, coloring, and using artistic talents to feature words that made a poem on the page. The poems were posted on the library’s bulletin board throughout the month, and patrons voted for their favorite page.

Pioneer Branch Library patrons have chosen Jess Bartley’s “The Night Sky” poem as the winning entry. The poem reads:

“Half asleep, but I do not want to rest.
Stars bright, and head clear.
Felt the phosphorescence white,
In the starlight cold.”

The Blackout Poetry Contest is a fun way to encourage writing and creativity. This is the second year the Pioneer Library has held the contest. Many patrons actively participate, and all enjoy seeing the posted artwork.
