Stryker Branch Library will start their Summer Reading Program on Tuesday, June 10 and finish on Thursday, July 10. “Fizz, Boom, Read” will be this summer’s theme. Parents can help their children maintain their reading skills over the summer break by bringing them to reading programs at the library.

Summer Reading registration begins June 2. Stop in to register and pick up a ballot to name our very own 6-foot mascot robot. Ballots must be turned in by 6th. The winner will receive a prize!

Summer reading will kick off on Tuesday, June 10 at 1:00 pm with a visit from “Mad Scientists” Mr. B and Mr. D. Take part in science experiments, listen to jokes, share a snack and go on a scavenger hunt. There will also be special giveaways!
Special guest speakers will visit the library throughout the summer reading months on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm. On June 17, come get fingerprinted and learn about safety with Deputy Sheriff Paul McCord. Get your picture taken with Johnny, the mascot from the Ft. Wayne TinCaps, and decorate and eat a baseball cookie on June 24. Get patriotic on July 1 and make and eat Firecracker Floats! Learn about your eyes on July 8th with the program, “Adventures of Rhet and Tina,” brought to the library by Real Eyes, which is affiliated with the Ohio Department of Health.

Wednesdays will be “Stories on the Lawn” being held from 1:00 to 1:30 pm. “Stories on the Lawn” will be held outside under the shade tree, weather permitting, with stories being read by a different local celebrity each week. The stories will be moved inside if necessary. Guest readers include Nate Johnson, Steve Schlosser, Trudy Partee, Cindy Ruffer, and Sandy Stuckey. There will be cool treats after the stories. Children who attend “Stories on the Lawn” will be given a ballot at each program to enter to win two passes to Science Central in Ft. Wayne. The drawing will take place on July 9th.

To go along with the summer reading theme this year the library will have a “Science Lab” where interesting experiments will take place. The lab will be used on Thursdays during “Come and Go Craft and Experiment Days.” Kids are invited to stop in between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm and take part in each week’s themed activities. June 12th will be “Everything S. Day.” Learn about the power of smell, sight, taste, touch, and hearing on June 19th with the program “Five Senses Day.” June 26th will have the theme, “Science Time.” Celebrate Independence Day on July 3 by creating a 4th of July craft!

Summer reading’s Closing Party will be held on July 10 at 1:00 pm with a program given by Science Central from Fort Wayne. You don’t want to miss it! During the final week of Summer Reading (July 7-11) the children who participated in at least 4 weeks of the program will be receiving a “Fizz Boom Read” T-shirt.

Also this summer in June, July, and August, Stryker Library is featuring “Puppies on the Go.” Stryker families may choose one of five different available puppies (stuffed toys) to check out for a two-week loan period. Borrow a puppy and take it along on a family vacation, special event, day in the park, or picnic. Take a photograph of your child or family with the puppy at the special event. Each child may submit a non-returnable photo to be displayed on the library’s picture board. Photos need to be submitted when the puppies are returned to the library. At that time, the child’s name will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize. Deadline for all entries is August 15th at 5:00 pm.

Throughout summer reading at Stryker, children may sign up once daily, per checkout, for a drawing for four King’s Island tickets to go to one lucky winner, chosen on July 11.

Stryker Library is located at 304 S. Defiance Street. Please stop by the library to pick up a calendar of events. For questions about the summer reading program, contact library manager Connie Aeschliman at 419-682-5081.
