Betty Suffel (1931-2019)

Betty A. Suffel, 88, of Montpelier, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Brookview Healthcare in Defiance. She was born on March 10, 1931 in Bridgewater Township, OH to Ralph and Sarah A. (Owen) Miller.

Betty graduated from Kunkle High School in 1949. She went on to obtain her associates degree in theology. On May 26, 1951 Betty married Glen W. Suffel in Stryker, OH and he preceded her in death on February 14, 2013.

Betty was a homemaker who devoted most of her life to raising her children and to her faith. For a brief time, she worked at C.J. Engels in Montpelier.

She volunteered at WINM Broadcasting in Edgerton as a telephone operator and also volunteered at The Helping Hands Food Pantry in Montpelier.


Betty was a member of River of Life Church in Montpelier where she was an elder. She enjoyed fishing and reading.

Betty is survived by her five children, David (Teresa) Suffel of Pearland, TX, DeWayne (Kathy Woodring) Suffel of Defiance, Dorothy (Joe) Johnson of Monroe, IN, Jean (Robert) Wagner of Fort Wayne, IN and Marilyn (Joseph) Staniski of Frederick, MI; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and her beloved cats, Duffy and Ellie Mae. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and seven brothers, Reo, Lester, Harold, Eldon, Earl, Owen and Olin Miller.

Visitation for Betty will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 3-7 pm at the Thompson-Geesey Funeral Home, Empire Street Chapel in Montpelier. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Homer Miller to officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier.
