George Washington Sanders, age 83, of Alvordton, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Community Health Professionals Hospice Residence in Defiance. He was born in Newark, Arkansas on August 30, 1936 to Fred and Daisy (Flippin) Sanders.

George attended and graduated from Alvordton High School and then served his country in the United States Army. He married Maryann Lett in 1958, and she preceded him in death on July 30, 2014.

George held many jobs in his lifetime, mostly in the manufacturing and construction fields. In his free time, he enjoyed working in his yard, watching all sports and old westerns – especially Gunsmoke and Rifleman, and when he was able, riding his bicycle.

Surviving George are his children, Tim Sanders, Christine (Jay) Shaffer, and Kinberly Booth; grandchildren, Chloe Mae Beaverson and Nicholas Shaffer; and a sister, Wilma Smith.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Melinda Sanders; and brothers, Thomas, Gary, Leonard, Fred William, Jr., and Jimmy Sanders.

According to George’s wishes, cremation will take place. A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, August 17, 2020, at 10:00 AM, at Pleasant View Union Cemetery in Fayette. Pastor Dan VanArsdalen will officiate.

Those planning a memorial contribution in George’s memory are asked to consider Evergreen Manor in Montpelier. Online condolences to the family may be offered at www.eaglemarryfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements are entrusted to Eagle-Marry Funeral Home in Fayette.
