Doris Porath (1931-2023)

Doris M. Porath, age 91, of West Unity, Ohio passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice near Defiance.

Doris was a homemaker, farmer and worked for the West Unity Schools as a cafeteria worker, bus driver and custodian for 35 years, retiring at age 70.

She and her husband drove for North American Van Lines for 3 years and enjoyed seeing the country.

Doris enjoyed sewing, gardening, attending her grandchildren’s school events.


Her family members all received several knotted comforters including as graduation gifts. She was an active member of Olive Branch Christian Union Church in Fayette.

Doris was born on December 4, 1931, in West Unity, Ohio, the daughter of Hazel and Lura (Vanderveer) Colon.  She was a 1949 graduate of Stryker High School.

Doris married Robert F. Porath on August 7, 1950 in Angola, Indiana and he preceded her in death on July 31, 1996.


Doris is survived by her daughters, Judy Karnes, of Bryan, Connie (Ned) Ruffer, of Coldwater, Michigan and Karen (Bradley) Stucky, of Bryan; 14 grandchildren, Casey Karnes, Amy (Nelson) Karnes, Emily Karnes, Benjamin (Kinsey) Woolace, Eric (Dawn) Woolace, Tyler (Jamie) Woolace, Justin (Shaley) Ruffer, Colin (Diana) Ruffer, Parker (Conner) Ruffer, Rebecca (Scott) Viers, Nicholas (Jennifer) Miller, Angela Porath, Jessica (Kevin) James and Josh (Sally) Boyer; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Jean Siders, of Bryan and her loving dog, Gypsy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, John Porath; daughter, Kathy Boyer; 2 grandchildren, Bridgett Boyer and Melissa Ruffer; sister, Virginia Kuney and brother, Moris Colon.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 19, 2023 from 2:00-3:00 P.M. at the West Unity United Methodist Church, 311 North Liberty Street, West Unity, Ohio. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Jay Moore officiating. Krill Funeral Service, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan has been entrusted with his arrangements. She will be laid to rest at Floral Grove Cemetery in West Unity in a private service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to Olive Branch Christian Union Church, 21431 County Road P, Fayette, OH 43521.
