The Bryan City Council met April 17, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. They began with the pledge of allegiance. Council President Richard Hupe opened the meeting, with Councilors F. John Betts, Judith Yahraus, Mary Leatherman, and Jim Kozumplik present. Also attending were Mayor Carrie Schlade and Clerk / Treasurer Laura Rode.

Council then heard from three individuals during the time allotted for public participation. First greeted was Gene Reeinger, who wanted to bring up the commencement of a Democracy Day wherein the public would air their grievances to council members in a sort of “open house” type of style.

The second mention was to urge Bryan into considering moving to a 32-hour work week to attract more workers.

Secondly, council heard from Steve Cox, who raised concerns he had about rocks that were dislodged along the roadside near his residential community due to the effect of recent hydrant flushing on the newly repaired roads.

The repairs added gravel to the sides, and when the hydrants were flushed, that gravel was put all over the road.

Council replied that residents need to find a solution that works best for them when trying to tackle the issue.

Then, council heard from former councilor Tom Morr, who brought up concerns about the newly codified ordinances with regards to trash receptacles.

Mayor Schlade assured Morr that while the codes themselves may be worded strictly; their enforcement will only be implemented in situations that resemble blight in the way of being an eyesore from the road.

Laura Rode’s report was accepted by council, approving the purchase of a new cab and chassis for the Bryan City Street Department and a grant reimbursing the city for two year’s worth of one police officer’s wage.

Council then carried a regretful acceptance of the resignation of former Mayor Doug Johnson, who had been serving in the Planning and Zoning Board.

Council wished Johnson the best and thanked him for the many acts of service he has provided for the community over the years.

Mayor Schlade reminded residents that bulk trash drop-off is set for April 27-28, 1-7 p.m. and April 29, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at the street department building off Townline Road.

Council then thanked residents for contributing to the council’s discussion, thanking them for being involved and welcoming other residents to do the same before carrying a motion to adjourn the meeting.
