The North Central Board of Education met in regular session at 5 p.m. on June 12, 2023.

The first thing approved was a resolution amending the prices for sports passes for the next season, as these price increases will allow all students in grades K-12 free entry into sports events, with grades K-5 requiring adult supervision to attend.

Then approved was Treasurer Eric Smeltzer’s report, which included the minutes of the May 16, 2023 meeting.

Also included in Smeltzer’s report were the bills for the month of May and the premium for next year’s liability, auto, violence, and property insurance.

There were also two donations accepted from Nickloy’s Fix & Fab for the backpack program totaling $1,248.

The board expressed continued thanks to Nickloy’s Fix & Fab for their contributions to the backpack program and the community, highlighting that the impact made would be much less substantial without them.

Scholarships awarded to the members of the Class of 2023 were then approved, which were listed as follows: North Central Community Scholarship ($750 each): Emma Fidler, Mario Marmolejo, Quin Burt, and Macie Gendron; Pioneer Transformer Scholarship ($1,000): Mario Marmolejo; NC Class of 1960 Scholarship ($500): Macie Gendron; Robert Gamboe Memorial Scholarship ($500)- Kaytee Tomblin ; Lynn & Nancy Elston Scholarship ($500)- Isabelle Burnett, Quin Burt, Lillian Martin, Emma Fidler, Macie Gendron, and Kaytee Tomblin.

Next was Superintendent Michael Bute’s report, where he started off by thanking the NCLS and custodial staff for their recent efforts, as well as highlighting his F3 component of using continued education to work on “responding instead of reacting.”

Elementary Principal Andy Morr thanked the FFA for the interest in animals that they brought to the kids, the 3rd grade’s effort on the wax museum, and the Pioneer Library for stepping up to provide safe, fun activities for children in the Summer.

Summer school is planned to run the 1st-11th of August and is planned to have around 20 students and five staff members.

Principal Greg Putthoff then recognized those who were honored by Four County, the baseball team’s effort, detailed handbook edits (including a new, stricter cell-phone policy), and how pleased he was that graduation went so well, noting that some testing should be done a little earlier on the microphones next year.

There are two open positions for next year, and both are planned to be filled by the next Board of Education meeting.

All superintendent recommendations were accepted as presented before the Board accepted the consent agenda with one edit, which was approving Josh Fiser’s 8th grade boys basketball coaching position.

The North Central Board of Education then entered executive session to discuss personnel at 5:34 p.m., after which no action was taken.

The next regular session for the North Central Board of Education will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 in the auditeria at 6 p.m.
