Iva “Jean” Young (1926 – 2024)

Iva “Jean” Young, 97, of Bryan passed away peacefully on April 18, 2024 at her home, listening to her big band music. She was born on November 3, 1926 in Canon City, Colorado to Eugene C. and Lenora E. (Ballew) Jones.

Jean graduated from Canon City High School in 1945 and then received her bachelor and master’s degree in education from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado.

On July 22, 1949 she married Marion D. Young in Canon City, Colorado and he preceded her in death in May of 2001.


Jean was a lifelong educator; starting her career in Granda High School in Colorado, then at the Air Force Academy High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She would also work at Flager High School, Bennett School, Creede High School all of Colorado.  Jean concluded her education career after 10 years at the Lower Kuskokwim School District in Bethel, Alaska as the director of media services. Soon after, she and Marion moved to West Unity to be closer to their only child and the grandchildren.

Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier and in Bryan, Bryan Moose, Montpelier Hospital Auxiliary and CBS Study Club.


She was also a former member of Fountian City Squares, Alaska Retired Education Association, and Order of the Eastern Star in Bennett, Colorado.

Jean was an avid reader for nearly her entire life. She also enjoyed quilting and knitting and giving these creations to family and friends.

Jean is survived by her daughter Linda Stantz of Bryan; three grandchildren Britt (Brionne) Stantz, Kati (Steve) Mantel and Kirsten (Adam) Wagner; six great grandchildren, Brock and Aubrynn Stantz, Ivy and Elin Mantel and Ezekiel and Gabriel Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her son in-law Herbert “Butch” Stantz.


Visitation hours for Jean will be held on Friday, April 26, 2014 from 10 am – 12 pm at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. Services will immediately follow at 12 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Leo Pech to officiate. Jean will be laid to rest at the Kunkle Cemetery in Kunkle, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Bryan Senior Center, First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier or Bryan.  Condolences can be left for the family at www.thethompsonfuneralhome.com
