(Longtime Resident Of Fayette)

Ruth L. Hutchison, 96, of Fayette, Ohio, made her final curtain call on January 7, 2025. She was born Ruth Lorrine Mahon on August 17, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan to William and Lena Mahon.

Ruth graduated from Wauseon High School in 1946 and married Richard “Dick” Hutchison July 10, 1948.

Ruth owned her own beauty salon, The Kurly-E-Kue, for 15 years. When she sold the salon, she worked at various places such as The Red & White grocery store, Fayette’s nursing home, Evergreen High School and eventually ending her career at Fayette High School as a study hall monitor and library aide for 37 years.

She held a special feeling for all of the students regardless of whether she had to scold them or not. At 85 years old, she instilled manners and respect, and offered a listening ear to those receptive teenagers.

Two years later, Ruth would earn a Bachelor Degree in Bible Studies, indicating that education was important to her no matter your age.

Ruth was a proud resident of Fayette for over 70 years and was very active in the community. She served as Fayette’s Normal library board president for over 50+ years, was a member of the Christian Church of Disciples where she directed the junior choir and filled in as pianist when needed, played an active role in Fayette’s Opera House and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for over 80 years. In 2008 Ruth was chosen as Fayette’s Citizen of the Year during Fayette’s Bull Thistle Festival.

Ruth’s greatest treasure was her family. She attended all her children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren’s activities such as sporting events, band and choir concerts, plays, grandparents day, graduations – the list is endless.

Ruth designed costumes for their special events and played sports and other games with them throughout the years, never slowing down. She was their biggest cheerleader in all of their accomplishments.

Music and the arts were an integral part of Ruth’s life. Her father and uncle played in the Detroit Symphony and the US Army Band during World War I. Ruth played the clarinet, saxophone, piano, flute and almost any other instrument she could get her hands on.

She directed Fayette’s 5th and 6th grade band, directed school plays at Fayette High School, participated in local plays, and for 20 years was a member of Fayette’s “The Pretenders” impersonating celebrities such as Liberace, Edith Ann, Carol Channing, Ernestine the telephone operator and Phyllis Diller.

Ruth was a member of the Delta Community Band and her latest gig was playing in Fayette’s Kitchen Band – spoons, pot lids, and all.

Ruth’s legacy is one of love, compassion, smiles, hugs and service. She touched the lives of countless people during her lifetime and her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

Ruth’s life was a testament to the power of the human spirit and her positive outlook on life. As Edith Ann would say – And That’s the Truth!

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Richard “Dick” Hutchison, her parents William and Lena Mahon, sister Dolores Zimmer and foster daughter Vera Sallows. She is survived by her children William “Bill” (Deb) Hutchison and Linda (Juan) Nanez, grandchildren Kyle (Becky) Hutchison, Paul (Sara) Nanez, Neil (Meg Perry) Nanez, Nicole (Jake) Bilek, Russ Ryder, Jeremy Cleaves and Tim (Laurie) Reynolds, 10 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, nieces Julie Marcell and Peggy Studebaker, nephews Richard Lee Shipman and Rollin Shipman, life-long friend Leta Marzolf, special friends Marge Crowell, Maria Martinez, and many more in the Fayette community.

A special thank you to the staff at Elizabeth Scott Community and Hospice of NW Ohio for the love and care they bestowed upon Ruth. It was a perfect ending to a life well lived.

A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. The family asks that donations be made to the Fayette Opera House, Fayette Normal Library or the Fayette American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Arrangements were made with the guidance of the Eagle-Marry Funeral Home, Fayette.
