(A Life Rooted In Family & Community)

Gerald “Jerry” William Huffman, age 88, of Swanton and previously a longtime resident of New Waterford, Ohio, peacefully passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at the Swanton Valley Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Jerry was born Feb. 6, 1938, in Boardman Township of Mahoning County, Ohio, to Lurtie William Huffman and Elva Elizabeth (Horst) Huffman.

He graduated from North Lima High School in 1956 and went on to attend Bryan College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education. While in college, he met Jean Landgraf.

The two were later united in marriage and were blessed with their daughter, Ruth E. Huffman. Jean preceded him in death on June 13, 2010.

For more than 20 years, Jerry faithfully served as a sixth-grade teacher with Crestview Schools, where he made a lasting impact on the lives of many students. He was dedicated to education and took pride in helping shape young minds, while also sharing his sense of humor with jokes to engage with students and make learning fun.

Outside of the classroom, Jerry found joy in the outdoors. He took great pride in manicuring his property, while in his younger years dabbling in farming and raising horses, cows, chickens and even goats. He also enjoyed tinkering on cars whenever he had a chance.

Jerry is survived by his loving daughter, Ruth (John) Both of Swanton; brother, Leonard (Tanya) Huffman of Shade, Ohio; grandchildren, Rebekah Both, Hannah Both, Joshua Both, Deborah (Jenish) Simon, and Josiah Both; nephew, Jason (Sheri) Huffman; and niece, Heidi (Alan) Barr.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public services. A private celebration of Jerry’s life will be held by the family at a later date. Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to Barnes Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 5825 State Highway 109, Delta, Ohio.

Those wishing to express sympathy are encouraged to consider a memorial contribution to Southern Care Hospice, 6545 Central Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43617, in Jerry’s memory.

Messages of comfort and condolences may be shared with the family through the funeral home’s website at www.barnesfuneralchapel.com.
