Mildred Wolf Dilworth died on December 29 in Toledo. Born on March 24, 1920 in Fostoria, Ohio, she was the youngest of five children of Andrew and Mary Brant Wolf. After graduating from Bowling Green High School in 1938, she attended Bowling Green State University, where she became a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and was selected Homecoming Queen in 1939. She graduated in 1942 with a B.S. in Education, later earning her Masters Degree in Education from St. Francis University in Fort Wayne, IN, in 1974.
While teaching in Lorain, Ohio, she met Robert William Dilworth, a metallurgical engineer at U.S. Steel. With her support, he was able to switch careers and to enroll as a medical student at Western Reserve University (now Case Western). After his medical service during the Korean War, the couple moved to Montpelier and joined St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was active in the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary and the PTA, as well as serving on the board of the public library for 26 years.
After the birth of two sons, she continued her teaching career at Montpelier High School for nearly two decades. She also helped manage Dr. Dilworth’s medical practice, before and after her local teaching career. In 2004, she and her husband moved to Toledo to be near her son, Tom. Dr. Dilworth died in 2005.
She is survived by sons Tom (a financial advisor in Toledo) and Lee (a cardiologist in Knoxville, TN); 4 grandchildren: Julie (a lawyer), Brian (a fourth-year medical student), Evan (an accountant), and Anna (a sophomore at Auburn University); 2 nieces (Bonnie Ledbetter and Margaret Hoffman); and 1 nephew (Jack Shelton).
Visitation will be from 2pm- 4pm on Tuesday, January 1, at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier. Funeral services will follow at 4pm with Reverend Robert Damschroder to officiate. A private interment will be on Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier.
